When silver nitrate is added to sodium chloride

Solution

Double displacement reaction:

  • It is a chemical reaction in which two compounds in their aqueous solutions react to form two new compounds by the mutual exchange of their radicals.
  • In a general double decomposition, the reaction can be represented as
  • AB+CDAD+BC
  • For example when sodium chloride (NaCl) reacts with sodium nitrate (AgNO3), they undergo a mutual exchange of their radicals.
  • NaCl(aq)sodiumchloride+AgNO3(aq)silvernitrateAgCl(s)silverchloride+NaNO3(aq)sodiumnitrate
  • The above reaction is also a precipitation reaction.
