Solution

Double displacement reaction:

  • It is a chemical reaction in which two compounds in their aqueous solutions react to form two new compounds by the mutual exchange of their radicals.
  • In a general double decomposition, the reaction can be represented as
  • AB+CDAD+BC
  • For example when sulphuric acid(H2SO4) reacts with barium chloride(BaCl2), they undergo a mutual exchange of their radicals.
  • BaCl2(aq)bariumchloride+H2SO4(aq)sulphuricacidBaSO4(s)bariumsulphate+2HCl(aq)hydrochloricacid
  • The above reaction is also a precipitation reaction.
