Question

Given the symbol of the ion as Fe2656+3. Find the atomic number, mass number, charge, number of neutrons, electrons, and protons of the ion.

Open in App
Solution

  • Since the given ion is Fe ,the element is iron and atomic number = number of protons = 26.
  • The mass number of the ion is given as 56,(written right top side of Fe).
  • As we can see a +3 on the iron it indicates the charge of the ion.Hence charge is +3.
  • Number of electrons of neutral Fe atom will be same as atomic number; 26. But here we have a +3 charge on it. It implies that the iron atom has lost 3 electrons.
  • Hence number of electrons in the ion=(26-3)=23.
  • Number of neutrons=(mass number-atomic number)=(56-26)=30.
  • Hence the atomic number;26, mass number:56, charge:+3, number of electrons:23, number of neutrons:30.
