Harshvardhan walks from home to school with a speed of 4 km per hour and returns home with 2km per hour . Find the average speed of the whole journey?

Open in App
Solution

Let the distance between home and school = x km

Case 1

Speed = 4 km/h

Distance = x km

Time = Distance/Speed

= (x/4) hrs.

Case 2

Speed = 2 km/h

Distance = x km

Time = Distance/Speed

= (x/2) hrs.

Now, Total Distance covered by boy = 2x km

Total Time taken = x/4 + x/2

= (x + 2x)/4

= 3x/4

= (3x/4) hrs.

Avreage speed of boy = Total Distance covered / Total Time taken

= 2x/3x/4

= 8/3 km/h
