Question

How can you prove that hydrochloric acid contains
(i) hydrogen,
(ii) chlorine?

Open in App
Solution

(i) When hydrochloric acid reacts with metals, it forms the respective chlorides, liberating hydrogen gas in the process.
Metal + Hydrochloric acid → Metal chloride + Hydrogen

For example, hydrochloric acid reacts with magnesium to form magnesium chloride and hydrogen gas.

Mg(s) + 2HCl(aq) → MgCl2(aq) + H2(g)
Magnesium Magnesium chloride Hydrogen

(ii) When hydrochloric acid reacts with strong oxidising agents, chlorine gas is liberated.

Oxidising agent + Conc. hydrochloric acid → Salt + Water + Chlorine

For example, concentrated hydrochloric acid reacts with manganese dioxide to form manganese chloride and chlorine gas.

MnO2(s) + 4HCl(aq) → MnCl2(aq) + 2H2O(l) + Cl2(g)
Manganese Manganese chloride Chlorine
