Question

How do you represent dominant and recessive genes?

Open in App
Solution

Dominant gene:

  • The dominant form of a gene, or a dominant allele is an allele that expresses itself irrespective of the presence of another allele.

Representation of dominant gene:

  • A dominant gene is represented by a capital letter.
  • In an individual with genotype Tt, a capital letter or T will be the dominant allele.
  • A pair of alleles that can control the height of an organism. Here, the allele represented with T is dominant.

Recessive gene:

  • A recessive form of a gene, or a recessive allele is an allele whose ability is suppressed by the dominant allele.
  • The expression of recessive alleles can only occur when two recessive alleles coding for the same trait are present together.

Representation of recessive gene:

  • A recessive gene is represented by a small letter.
  • In an individual with genotype Tt, a pair of alleles control the height of an organism.
  • Here, the allele represented with a small letter or t will be the recessive allele and its ability will be suppressed in the organism.
  • It can only show its ability when it forms a genotype along with another t allele.
