Question

How does a liquid change into a solid on cooling?

Open in App
Solution

  • The change of state can be explained on the basis of kinetic theory

  • As a liquid is cooled its molecules lose kinetic energy
  • The movement of particles slows down.
  • The attraction between the molecules increases. The intermolecular space between the particles decreases, causing a change in state from a liquid to a solid.
  • Then a phase transition from liquid to solid state takes place which is called freezing
