Question

How does a solid change into a liquid on heating?

Open in App
Solution

Solid: Any material which has a definite shape and definite volume at room temperature such that it can have any number of free surfaces.

Liquid: Any material which has a definite volume but no definite shape and has one free surface.

  • In solid, the particles occupy a fixed position.
  • They simply vibrate at their position.
  • They cannot leave their place.
  • On heating, a solid's particles start vibrating vigorously.
  • At the melting point, the particles of solid acquire sufficient kinetic energy to overcome the strong forces of attraction between them and move away from their position.
  • Thus solid changes into a liquid.
  • The process of conversion of solid into liquid is called melting.
