Solid: Any material which has a definite shape and definite volume at room temperature such that it can have any number of free surfaces.
Liquid: Any material which has a definite volume but no definite shape and has one free surface.
In solid, the particles occupy a fixed position.
They simply vibrate at their position.
They cannot leave their place.
On heating, a solid's particles start vibrating vigorously.
At the melting point, the particles of solid acquire sufficient kinetic energy to overcome the strong forces of attraction between them and move away from their position.
Thus solid changes into a liquid.
The process of conversion of solid into liquid is called melting.
