How does pyruvate enter mitochondria?

Open in App
Solution

Mitochondria:

  1. Mitochondria is a double membrane-bound cell organelle present in eukaryotic cells.
  2. It conducts oxidative phosphorylation and synthesises energy molecules for the cell.
  3. Pyruvate is synthesised in the cytosol by the process of glycolysis.
  4. For energy synthesis, pyruvate enters the mitochondria by active transport with the help of pyruvate translocase, a transport protein.
  5. Pyruvate is utilised in the citric acid cycle to produce acetyl CoA.
