(ii) Name the metallic ions that should be present in the electrolyte when an article made of copper is to be electroplated with silver.

Solution

Answer (i)

  • An anode is a positive electrode terminal of the cell.
  • Water is a poor conductor of electricity but it also has some H+ ions (hydrogen ions) and OH ions (hydroxide ions) that are formed after the dissociation of water molecules. So we have to add acids like dilute Sulfuric acid to take out electrolysis.
  • The product formed at the anode during the electrolysis of acidified water using platinum electrodes is Oxygen (O2) gas in the state.

Answer (ii)

  • The cathode is a negative terminal of the cell. The metallic ions that should be present in the electrolyte when an article made of copper is to be electroplated with silver Ag are Silver ions Ag+ which are solid in the state.
