Question

If orbital is defined as a region of an atom where electron may be found ,it will have physical significance. And if orbital is Defined as an equation (wave function)then it will not have physical significance .is this right?

Solution

Yes you are right. Wave function in quantum mechanics describes wave characteristics of a particle. The value of wave function of a particle at a given point of space and time is related to the likelihood of the particle's being there at the time. It may be thought of as an expression for amplitude. However wave function doesn't have any physical significance. But square of the wave function has significance since the probability of finding the electron/particle specified by a wave function at a given time is proportiobal to the square of the wave function.

So wavefunction is an expression which tells you the quantum state of the system. It doesn't have any significance.
