First equation of motion is given by v = u + at.
Where v is final velocity, u is initial velocity, a is acceleration, t is time period.
In this case, as final velocity is less than initial velocity i.e. v < u then the difference between v and u becomes negative. This results in negative acceleration which is also known as a retardation.
