Question

If the small squares have a length of 1 cm, what is the area of the big square?

Open in App
Solution

Concept: Area is the measure of the size inside a shape.

Method 1: The small squares are of unit length. If we can calculate the number of such squares packed into the larger square, we will get the area of the big square.

We see that 25 little squares are packed into this big square. So the area of the big square is 25 square cm.

Method 2: Another way we can figure out the area of this shape, is by counting the number of small squares that fit along the length of the shape.

In this case, 5 squares fit into the length and since this is a square, all the lengths will be the same.

Then we can simply multiply the lengths to get the area.
Here, area =5×5=25 square cm.
