Question

In a H2O molecule, total number of single bonds are___

Open in App
Solution

There are two single bonds formed between hydrogen and oxygen.
The number of valence electrons in oxygen is 6 and that in hydrogen is 1 so, the number of electrons needed by oxygen to fulfil its octet is 2 whereas hydrogen just needs one electron to fill its valence shell.

Oxygen will share its electrons with 2 hydrogen atoms and each hydrogen atom will share 1 electron with an oxygen atom to form the two single bonds.
