Question

In an electroscope, if a negatively charged body is brought in contact with the metal clip, the strips of the electroscope diverge. If now another charged object carrying an equal amount of positive charge is brought in contact with the clip, what will happen?

Solution

Divergence of strips of the electroscope due to neutralization.

  1. The electroscope is a device that helps to check the presence of electric charge and identify its nature.
  2. An electroscope is made up of a conducting rod that vertically passes through a rubber stopper fitted in the mouth of a glass jar.
  3. The lower end of the rod is connected to two thin strips.
  4. Conducting nature of the rod allows the charge to flow to the strips.
  5. A metal clip is attached to the upper end of the rod.
  6. When a negatively charged body is brought in contact with the metal clip at the outer end of the rod, the negative charge flows down to the strips and the strips diverge due to the repulsion of the negative charge they have received,
  7. If another equal amount of positively charged object is brought in contact with the clip, it will neutralize the negative charge present in the strips and the strips will converge to the original position.

Hence, the strips will come to their original position.
