Question

In the analysis of 0.5 g sample of feldspar, a mixture of chlorides of Na and K are obtained which weighs 0.1180 g. Subsequent treatment of mixed chlorides with AgNO3 gives 0.2451 g AgCl. The % of K2O in feldspar is (as the nearest integer) :

Solution

Let feldspar contains a g ofNa2O and b g of K2O
Na2O2NaClAgNO3−−−2AgCl
K2O2KClAgNO3−−−2AgCl
62gNa2O=2×58.5gNaCl
agNa2O=2×58.5×a62gNaCl =1.8871×ag
Also, 94gK2O=2×74.5gKCl
bgK2O=2×74.5×b94gKCl =1.5851×bgKCl
1.8871a+1.5851b=0.1180...(i)
Similarly,
62gNa2O=2×143.5gAgCl
agNa2O=2×143.5×a62gAgCl =4.6290×agAgCl
Also, 94gK2O=2×143.5gAgCl
bgK2O=2×143.5×b94gAgCl =3.0532×bgAgCl
4.6290a+3.0532b=0.2451 ...(ii)
Solving Eqs. (i) and (ii), a = 0.0179 g, b = 0.0531 g
%ofK2O=0.0531×1000.5=10.62
So, nearest integer is 11.
