Soap micelle:-

  1. A soap molecule is actually a Sodium or Potassium salt of the long-chain carboxylic acid.
  2. This chain would be composed of two sections and that would be a long hydrocarbon tail as well as a negatively charged head.
  3. The hydrocarbon tail which is there in the molecule would be hydrophobic as well as insolube in water which depicts that it would be repelled by the water molecules.
  4. The polar end present in the molecule would be water soluble as well as hydrophilic.
  5. So, when soap is added to wet dirty surface , the polar end that would be present in the soap molecule will dissolve in water whereas the non-polar one will attach itself to the dirt molecule.
  6. This all will result in the formation of spherical clusters which are further known as micelle.
  7. In the micelle, the hydrophobic tails present are there in the interior of the cluster whereas the ionic part will be there on the surface of the cluster.
  8. This all is due to the, ion-ion repulsion and therefore micelle stays in the solution as a colloid and does not come together for the formation of precipitate.
  9. So, an emulsion is formed which will help for the dissolution of dirt in water and then it is finally washed with the help of running water.
