Question

Is it possible for eggs to be fertilized by two different sperm cells?

Open in App
Solution

It may happen occasionally not always.

Fertilization

  • The process of fusion of male gamete(sperm) with female gamete(egg).
  • Only one egg is usually released during ovulation. However, ovaries occasionally release two eggs at the same time.
  • There is a chance that two different sperm cells will fertilize both eggs. A woman gives birth to twins in this case. Fraternal twins or non-identical twins are the terms used to describe these types of twins. They do not have the same DNA and may not appear identical because they are from two different egg cells and two different sperm cells.
