It is given that,

Length of a rectangle is $4cm$ more than its breadth.

$\Rightarrow x=y+4$ --(1)

Perimeter of the rectangle is $40cm$.

Since, Perimeter of the rectangle $=2\times [\text{length}+\text{breadth}]$

$\Rightarrow 2(x+y)=40$

$\Rightarrow x+y=\frac{40}{2}$

$\Rightarrow x+y=2$---(2)
