Solution

Symbiosis is defined as an interaction between species where both the species can be benefitted.

A lichen is a stable symbiotic association between a fungus and algae:

● Fungi require carbon as a food source which is satisfied by the algae due to the latter’s ability to undergo photosynthesis.

● Fungi provides algae with optimal living conditions and improved access to water and mineral nutrients.

Separation of these two counterparts would result in disruption of their basic needs and thus will affect their survival. Hence, lichen is an example of symbiosis.

Hence, the correct answer is b. both will die.
