The peripheral part is the stroma, consisting of growing ovarian follicles.
The inner region is called the medulla and has blood vessels and nerves.
Functions of the ovary:
Oogenesis: The outermost cell layer of the ovary is known as the germinal epithelium. It develops into an ovarian follicle in which the development of female gametes called ova occurs.
Endocrine function secretes the steroidal hormones such as estrogens and progesterone. Estrogen helps develop secondary sexual characteristics in females at puberty and is the primary feminizing hormone. Progesterone helps maintain the corpus luteum during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle.
