Question

Name the air pollutants that contribute to acid rain

Open in App
Solution

Acid rain: Rainwater containing dissolved oxides of Sulphur(S) and Nitrogen(N) is called acid rain.

  • Burning of coal, petrol, and diesel produces Carbon dioxide(CO2), Carbon monoxide(CO), Oxides of Sulphur(SO2), oxides of Nitrogen(NO2), and unburnt hydrocarbons.
  • All oxides escape into the atmosphere.
  • The oxides of Nitrogen and Sulphur present in the air dissolve in rainwater to produce Sulphuric acid(H2SO4) and Nitric acid (HNO3)

Therefore(SO2), (NO2) are pollutants that cause acid rain.
