Solution

Corpus luteum

  1. After ovulation, the empty follicle (from which the egg is released) enters the luteal phase. It forms the corpus luteum, a yellow-coloured hormone-secreting cell.
  2. The corpus luteum secretes progesterone that helps in the thickening of the uterine lining to support the growth of the fetus if fertilization takes place.
