Solution

Antidiuretic hormone [ADH]

  1. It is formed by hypothalamic neurons and released and stored by the posterior pituitary (neurohypophysis) in form of herring bodies.
  2. It is also called vasopressin because it acts as a vasoconstrictor by narrowing arteries and increasing arterial blood pressure.
  3. It acts on the nephrons of distal convoluted tubules and the collecting duct and conditional reabsorption of water takes place.
  4. Thus, producing concentrated urine.
  5. Deficiency or hyposecretion of ADH leads to Diabetes insipidus (passing of a large volume of dilute urine contains no sugar.)
