Solution

Islets of Langerhans

  1. Islets of Langerhans are irregularly shaped patches of endocrine tissue located in the pancreas of most vertebrates.
  2. They are made up of four distinct cell types, three of which (alpha, beta, and delta cells) produce important hormones.
  3. They produce the two most important hormones:

Insulin

  1. The most abundant islet cells, beta-cells, produce insulin.
  2. It is the main hormone in the regulation of carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism.
  3. It lowers the blood glucose level.

Glucagon

  1. Glucagon is produced by alpha-cells of islets of Langerhans present in the pancreas.
  2. The main function of glucagon is to release glucose from glycogen stored in the liver (glycogenolysis).
