Question

Name the types of isomerism shown by the following pairs of compounds:
(i) [Cu(NH3)4][PtCl4] and [Pt(NH3)4][CuCl4]
(ii) [Co(Pn)2Cl2]+ and [Co(tn)2Cl2]+

Solution

(i) [Cu(NH3)4][PtCl4] and [Pt(NH3)4][CuCl4] shows coordination isomerism. There is interchange of ligands between cationic and anionic entities of different metal ions present in the complex.
(ii) [Co(Pn)2Cl2]+ and [Co(tn)2Cl2]+ shows ligand isomerism. Different isomers of same ligand are attached to Co metal. Pn is 1,2- Diaminopropane and tn is 1,3-Diaminopropane.
