Solution

Mutation

Inheritable change in the nucleotide sequence of the genome of an individual which ultimately changes the genotype of an organism is known as mutation

Types of mutation

Chromosomal mutation - change in the number and arrangement of chromosome

  1. Duplication - loss of part of chromosome
  2. Deletion - Extra copy made of part of chromosome
  3. Inversion - Reverses the direction of part of the chromosome
  4. Translocation - Part of one attaches to another chromosome

Gene mutation - Change in the sequence of DNA

Point mutation - Single base substitution in DNA sequence

  1. Silent mutation - Change in the sequence of DNA but there is no further impact on the amino acid sequence in a protein
  2. Nonsense mutation - Due to point mutation there is a change in the sequence of base pair leading to stop codon
  3. Missense mutation - Due to point mutation there is a change in the sequence of base pairs leading to another amino acid code
