Let the reduced price of the box after the discount be Rs. x. Then,

Sales tax = (9% of Rs.x) = Rs. $\left(\frac{9x}{100}\right)$

S.P = $Rs.(x+\left(\frac{9x}{100}\right))$ = Rs. $\left(\frac{109x}{100}\right)$

It is given that the selling price should be Rs. 981.

Therefore, $\left(\frac{109x}{100}\right)$ = 981

$\Rightarrow$ x = 900

Thus, reduced price of the box after discount = Rs. 900

Hence, reduction needed in the price of the box = (Rs. 981 - 900) = Rs. 81.
