Let three capacitors C1,C2 and C3 are connected in series. We know charge remains same in series combination. V1=qC1 V2=qC2 V3=qC3 V=V1+V2+V3=q(1C1+1C2+1C3) If the 3 capacitors are replaced by a single capacitor such that on giving it charge q is capacitance is C then V=qC ∴qC=q(1C1+1C2+1C3) or 1C=1C1+1C2+1C3
