Question

20 ml each of oxygen and hydrogen and 10 ml of carbon monoxide are exploded in an enclosure find volume and composition of the resulting mixture of the gases when they are cooled to room temperature?

Solution

Let us consider the reactions, taking place during explosion:

1) 20 ml 20 ml

2H2 + O2 ---------> 2H2O

Acording to Lussac’s Law 2 vol : 1 vol 2 vol

2x10 1x10 2x10

This means that all H2 reacts with half of O2.

Amount of unused here O2 =20-10 =10 ml which is used by another reaction taking place here:

2) 10 ml

2CO + O2 = 2CO2

Acording to Lussac’s Law 2 vol : 1 vol 2 vol

2x5 1x5 2x5

Even here all CO reacts with half O2.

10 ml of CO reacts only with 5 ml of O2 producing 10 ml of CO2

Amount of unused here O2 =10-5 = 5 ml

Therefore total mixture of gases contain (10ml of CO2 + 5 ml of O2) =15 ml
