Question

Explain BeCl2 has 0 dipole moment although the Be-Cl bonds are polar?

Open in App
Solution

Dipole moment of any molecule is vectorial addition of dipole moments of all the individual bonds.

BeCl2 is a linear molecule, Cl----Be---Cl

The dipole moment of two Be--Cl bond is equal but opposite in direction, so they cancel out each other and the net dipole moment becomes zero.
