Question

Give reasons for d following: 1) Solids have a regular geometrical shape, where a liquid do not have definite shape.

2) Gases are compressible but liquids and solids are not.

3) Water is a compound not a mixture

Solution

1) In solids particles are closely packed and have strong interparticle forces of attraction. They donot move from their place but only vibrate. Due to this solids have a a regular geometrical shape.

Whereas, in liquids; particles are not closely packed and have less strong interparticle forces of attraction. They can move from their place. Due to this, liquids donot have a definite shape.

2) The particles of gases have a lot of space between them due to very weak forces of attraction between them. Thus, gases can be compressed easily whereas the space between the particles of liquids is less and in solids the particles are tightly packed, therefore liquids and solids are not compressible.

3) In water, hydrogen and oxygen atoms are chemically bonded with each other. Therefore, water is a compound since in a mixture the components are only physically mixed, there is no chemical bonding between the components.
