Question

how deforestation reduces the water holding capacity of soil ? is it due to top soil erosion ?

Open in App
Solution

  • Humidity prevents excessive water loss and rapid desiccation. Plants contribute organic matter which upon decomposition adds humus to the soil. Porosity, water-holding capacity and productivity of the soil improve. The land affected with deforestation, causes soil erosion due to the depletion of the natural vegetation on the soil.
  • Soil erosion affects the stability and texture of soil. Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium like plant nutrients are lost when the topsoil is removed. This reduces the crop production and tree growth and lowers the water-holding capacity of the soil, making it more susceptible to drought.
