Question

How do cells destroy themselves ? Do chromosomes play a role in this also? If they do then how do red blood cells destroy themselves ? And as they don't have a nucleus, they can't divide and reproduce so how are new cells produced?

Solution

The cells destroy themselves by the process called apoptosis. Apoptosis is a programmed cells death that maintains constant number of cells in our body. Yes, chromosomes or genes plya role in it. It is basically genetically controlled mechanism of cell death.

Red blood cells (RBCs) are destroyed by the phagocytic activities of macrophages in the liver, spleen and lymph nodes.

Since these cells lack a nucleus, they cannot divide or synthesize new cellular components. They are formed in the bone marrow from stem cells by erythropoiesis process.
