1.obtain powdered charcoal from a mixture of copper oxide and powdered charcoal?

2.black copper oxide from a mixture of copper oxide and zinc oxide

Solution

(a). Powdered charcoal and copper oxide can be separated by addition of water. Charcoal being less dense floats on the top, and copper oxide settles at the bottom of the container. Charcoal can be decanted and filtered off similarly, copper oxide can be filtered from water.

(b). Zinc oxide is an amphoterric oxide and will react with a base, whereas copper oxide will not react with a base. thus if sodium hydroxide is added to the mixture containing zinc oxide and copper oxide, then zinc oxide will dissolve in base. Copper oxide can be filtered off from the solution. zinc oxide can be obtained from the solution by addition of acid to the solution and then subsequent filtration.
