Solution

Swelling or shrinking of plant cell is due to the inward or outward movement of water. Inward movement of water results in the increase in the size of cell membrane that exert pressure on cell wall and cell swells and outward movement of water results in the shrinkage of cell membrane away from the cell wall and hence shrinkage of cell.
