Question

on the basis of intermolecular energy and thermal energy explain why

  • a solid has rigidityy but a liquid does not have?
  • gases have high compressibility but solid and liquid have poor compressibility

Solution

a.

Liquid molecules have high thermal energy and less intermolecular energy so the molecules of gas are free to move and the liquids are not rigid.

On the other hand solid molecules have less thermal energy and high intermolecular energy so the molecules of solid are not free to move and the solids are rigid.

b.

Gas molecules have negligible molecular energy and very high thermal energy because of which there is lots of space present between the molecules of gas and hence these are highly compressible.

While liquid and solids dont have this much of space between their molecules.
