Question

Potassium chlorate decomposes, on heating , to form potassium chloride and oxygen. When 24.5g of potassium chlorate is decomposes completely then 14.9g of potassium chloride is formed . Calculate the mass of oxygen formed . State the law of chemical combination which you have used in solving this problem?

Solution

According to the law of conservation of mass, The sum of the mass of reactansta is equal to the sum of the mass of products.
KClO3 ------> KCl + 3/2 O2
Total mass of reactants = Total mass of products
This implies,
Mass of reactant = 24.5g
Mass of KCl = 14.9g
Therefore mass of oxygen obtain = (24.5 - 14.9)
= 9.6 g
