the sum of the ages of a father and his son is 72 years. after 2 years, father will be 4 years less than 3 times the age of his son. find their present ages.

Here is the answer to your question.
Let present age of father be x years
∴ Present age of son = (72 – x) years
Two years later;
Age of father = (x + 2) years
Age of son = (72 – x + 2) years = (74 – x) years
Given; 3(74 – x) – 4 = x + 2
⇒ 222 – 3x – 4 = x + 2
⇒ 218 – 3xx = 2
⇒ –4x = 2 – 218 = –216
x = 216/4 = 54
Present age of father = 54 years
Present age of son = 72 – 54 = 18 years.
