Question

Why do the gases diffuse but not the solids?

Open in App
Solution

Diffusion is readily observed in gases because the spaces between the particles of gases is very large. As a result, they move randomly in all directions at very high speed. However, particles in solids are very tightly and closely packed. Thus, they cannot move freely and so diffusion is not observed so commonly in solids.
