POPULATION OF INDIA CONTINUE TO BE HIGH IN SPITE OF DECLINE IN ANNUAL GROWTH RATE FROM 1981
The annual growth rate of population was rapidly increasing from 361 million in 1951 to 683 million in 1981.
However, from 1981 the growth rate started decreasing slowly. During this period, birth rates declined speedily. In spite of this 182 million people were added to the total population in the 1990s alone.
It is important to realise that India has a very large population. When a low annual rate is applied to a very large population, it results in a large undoubted increase.
When more than a billion people increases even at a lower rate, the total numbers ultimately becomes very large.
India’s current annual increase in population is more than enough to counterbalance efforts to protect the resource endowment and environment.
The decreasing trend of the growth rate is indeed a positive sign of the efforts of birth control. Admitting that the total additions to the population base continue to grow, and India is forecasted to be the world’s most populous country by 2025 by overtaking China.
