Solution

  • After returning from South Africa, Mahatma Gandhi followed an innovative method of mass agitation based on truth and non – violence
  • It was known as satyagraha
  • Gandhji believed that without the cooperation of Indians the British would not have ruled India
  • If Indians refused to cooperate, the rule would collapse within a year
  • Hence, the non – cooperation movement would have to be started in stages
  • As a first step to this movement, the titles awarded by the government should be surrendered, and as a second step, civil services, army, police, courts etc, should have to be boycotted
  • Rowlatt Act invited massive protests from people all over the country
  • The worst and brutal killing of hundreds of people at Jallianwala Bagh made Indians angry
  • These two events led Gandhiji start non – cooperation movement in India at a massive scale
