Pb(NO3)2(aq)+2KCl(aq)→2KNO3(aq)+PbCl2(s)
When lead nitrate solution is mixed with potassium chloride solution, a precipitate of lead chloride and solution of potassium nitrate are formed. This type of reaction is called _________________.
Double displacement reaction
Pb(NO3)2(aq)+2KCl(aq)→2KNO3(aq)+PbCl2(s)
In the above reaction, Pb2+ from Pb(NO3)2 displaces K+ from KCl and forms an insoluble solid PbCl2 . Similarly, K+ from KCl displaces Pb2+ from Pb(NO3)2 to form KNO3 solution. The ions (cations) are exchanged between the reactants.Hence, this reaction is called double displacement reaction.
General representation of a double displacement reaction: AB+CD→AD+CB
