Question

Q. A neutral organic compound X of molecular formula C2 H6 0 on oxidation with acidified potassium dichromate gives an acidic compound Y. Compound X reacts with compound Y on warming in presence of conc. H2 SO4 to give a sweet smelling substance Z. (a) Identify X, Y and (b) Write the chemical equation for the reactions involved.

Solution

Esters are sweet smelling substances hence Z is an ester,
Acids react with alcohols to give esters as it is given that Y is an acid hence X is an alcohol. Potassium dichromate is an oxudising agent. It oxidises the alcohol to acid.

Hence X = C2H6O = C2H5OH
Y = CH3COOH
Z= CH3COOC2H 5
