Question

Q. If there is 0.1M of AgNO3 and 0.01M of NaCl is there in a container separated by a semi permeable membrane. Will precipitate form ?if not , why ?

Solution

Precipitate will not be formed.
because as it is separated by a semipermeable membrane osmosis occurs from higher concentration to lower concentration.
That is from AgNO3 to NaCl.
The balanced equation is

AgNO3(aq) + NaCl(aq) ---> AgCl(s) + NaNO3(aq)

Therefore only 0.01 M of AgNO3 reacts with NaCl and forms a precipitate the remaining AgNO3 does not react.The amount of precipitate formed is negligible compard to the unreacted part.
