Solution

The correct option is A

If both assertion and reason are true but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.

Assertion - Reason relation

Assertion : Fungi may be saprophytic, parasitic or symbiotic.

Elaboration: Fungi do not have chlorophyll and hence they follow heterotrophic mode of nutrition.
  • Some fungi derive their nutrition from dead and decomposed organic matter and hence they are saprophytic.
  • The parasitic fungi get their nutrients from the live host.
  • Fungi also form the symbiotic association with algae and the roots of higher plants.
Hence, the given statement in the assertion is true.

Reason: The cell walls of fungi are composed of chitin and polysaccharide.

Elaboration: Fungal cell wall is made up of chitin which is a polymer of N-acetylglucosamine. However, the mode of nutrition of fungi is not related to the cell wall present in them. Hence, the reason does not explain the assertion.
