Callus culture is a type of in vitro plant tissue culture. A plant part that is excised from the original and is used for initiating a culture is called an explant. The explant when grown in a nutrient medium containing plant growth regulators (auxins and cytokinins) undergo cell division which can result in the formation of an organ or callus. Callus is an irregular mass of undifferentiated and unorganised cells which are actively dividing cells. These cells acquire meristematic activity.
