Separate the given mixture

Iron filings, sugar and sand

Open in App
Solution

Different separation techniques are present depending on the property of the substances to be separated

Iron filings, sugar, and sand can be separated by:

  1. First of all we can take a magnet to remove iron filings since they can be attracted by the magnet but sugar and sand do not.
  2. Then to the sugar and sand we can add water, where sugar will dissolve in water but sand does not.
  3. This mixture can be poured into a filter paper and sand can be separated.
  4. Dissolved sugar can be recovered by heating the solution and allowing it to evaporate from the water.

So the steps include-

magnetic separation, dissolving in water to run filtration and evaporation.
