Question

Sodium hydroxide will conduct electricity only in fused or aqueous solution Why?

Open in App
Solution

  • Electrical conductivity is possible when ions or electrons moves freely.
  • Sodium chloride exist as ions in aqueous or fused solution.
  • Due to the movement of Na+ and Cl-ions, they will conduct electricity.
  • So these ions are responsible for its conductivity.
  • But in solid sodium chloride, there is strong force of attraction between the ions .
  • So they are not free to move.
  • Hence ionic compounds do not conduct electricity in solid state.
