Solve $8x+3y=14;3x+y=5$ by using substitution method.

We have

$8x+3y=14$..........(i)

$3x+y=5$.............(ii)

from (ii) we can write $y=5-3x$

putting $y=5-3x$ in (i) we get

$8x+3(5-3x)=14$

$8x+15-9x=14$

$-x=-1$

$x=1$

put $x=1$ in $y=5-3x$

So $y=5-3=2$

Hence $x=1$ and $y=2$
